Simple + Natural Fix for Dry Hair

If you’ve tried argan oil and wasn’t exactly thrilled, it may be because argan should always be used with water. Both argan and marula oils (for very dry hair) are best used with water, due to their ability to prevent water loss and improve water retention - which is the only real source of hydration - and is now part of my standard routine to keep my hair moisturized without an oily feel. Here’s how you can add argan oil to your regime and maximize it’s water-loving benefits. I first read about this specific argan oil technique on CurlyNikki.com and I’ve since adapted it a bit.

  • Wash you hair (hopefully, with a sulfate-free shampoo or co-wash)

  • Rinse. After rinsing thoroughly, add a few drops of argan oil to your palms and massage into wet hair from roots to tip.  Pin up or let it sit for 10 minutes. DON'T RINSE.

  • Apply your conditioner ON TOP OF THE ARGAN OIL. Leave in for the recommended time.

  • Rinse thoroughly with warm, luke warm or cool water.

  • After towel drying, you can rub just a few drops of Argan oil between your palms and massage into hair, from roots to tips.

  • Apply your leave-in conditioner and proceed with your usual styling.

Your hair shouldn't feel oily, but if it does, you've used too much or didn't rinse thoroughly.  Adjust how much oil you use depending on your hair length and thickness.

This can also be used as a deep moisturizing treatment. After applying the argan oil, apply your conditioner on top of the argan oil, and let sit for 30 minutes, or longer. Rinse thoroughly for hydrated hair without an oily feel.

Moisturizing conditioner: I like Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose Conditioner. But, in a pinch, I’ve used Aussie Moist 3 Minute Miracle conditioner. For this treatment, the conditioner should focus on moisture, rather than protein.

Get Moisture on the Go:

Fill a small spray bottle about 3/4 full. Add a tablespoon of pure aloe vera gel (I like Lily of the Desert) and 10-15 drops of argan oil.  Mist hair lightly as needed. Shake before each use.

In addition to hydrated hair, you can reap these benefits, too:

  • smooth, silky shine

  • improved body and volume, resulting in a fuller appearance

  • enhanced curls and waves with more definition (because moisturized curls are always best)

  • hydrated hair is less likely to form split ends

Things to remember:

When you shop: Look on the label to make sure you’re buying 100 percent argan oil (known as argania spinosa) or 100 percent marula oil with no other ingredients.  Silicones and other chemicals often cause dryness.

Where to buy: The best pricing for organic argan oil I’ve found is the NOW brand at about $12 for 2 ounces (which lasts me two to three months), available at Vitacost.com and Sprouts.  I also use and recommend the Acure brand for its purity and pricing at $11 for one ounce, available on Amazon, at Sprouts and Vitacost.com
